Pattern formation in flowing electrorheological fluids.
A two-fluid continuum model is developed to describe mass transport in electro- and magnetorheological suspensions. The particle flux is related to the field-induced stresses. Solutions of the resulting mass balance show column formation in the absence of flow, and stripe formation when a suspension is subjected simultaneously to an applied electric field and shear flow.
متن کاملFlexoelectricity and pattern formation in nematic liquid crystals.
We present in this paper a detailed analysis of the flexoelectric instability of a planar nematic layer in the presence of an alternating electric field (frequency ω), which leads to stripe patterns (flexodomains) in the plane of the layer. This equilibrium transition is governed by the free energy of the nematic, which describes the elasticity with respect to the orientational degrees of freed...
متن کاملFlowing crystals: nonequilibrium structure of foam.
Bubbles pushed through a quasi-two-dimensional channel self-organize into a variety of periodic lattices. The structures of these lattices correspond to local minima of the interfacial energy. The "flowing crystals" are long-lived metastable states, a small subset of possible local minima of confined quasi-two-dimensional foams [P. Garstecki and G. M. Whitesides, Phys. Rev. E 73, 031603 (2006)1...
متن کاملModeling Biological Pattern Formation in Embryology
The mechanisms that generate pattern and form in embryogenesis are unknown. Realistic modeling tries to incorporate known biological facts into coherent and rational physicochemical model mechanisms that orchestrate the pattern formation process. Such models can be used to provide the developmental biologist with possible scenarios for how biological pattern and form are created and to suggest ...
متن کاملEddy Formation and Turbulence in Flowing Liquids
• The steady flow of liquids through straight rigid tubes has been extensively analyzed, but these data cannot be applied directly to the pulsatile flow of blood through distensible, tapered and branching vascular channels. Since it is very difficult to follow flow patterns in the living animal, certain types of studies must be performed in models. Laminar flow, eddy formation and turbulence ca...
